While many students call her their “Tutor” or “Math Coach”, Deb’s experience and support go far beyond that of a traditional tutor:

Initial Session(s):

New students are assessed, usually over 1 to 2 sessions, to learn how they process what they see and what they hear, as well as to determine their baseline math skills and knowledge.  Deb will review any prior assessments that may have been completed. (Neuropsychological, Psycho-Educational, Speech & Language, even Occupational Therapy assessments can be useful.)  School progress updates are also helpful, as well as hearing directly from the parents and the student regarding the areas they would most like support.

Regular Sessions:

Depending on a particular student’s needs, 50 or 80 minute sessions (often twice a week) are scheduled.  The 10 minutes between sessions allows for making quick notes, putting away materials, a brief check in with parents, and setting up for the next student.  Careful observation during each session guides ongoing instruction.  Deb often spends 30-60 minutes beyond each face-to-face instruction time creating or modifying specific lessons, gathering or making materials specific to each child’s needs, communicating with classroom teachers, and often researching new ideas or perspectives.
